Converting a Victorian cellar is no small feat, especially when you discover dodgy walls with little to no foundations. In this guide, I’m walking you through the tricky process of reinforcing a single-skin wall under a late 19th century terrace - because sometimes, the devil’s in the detail.

TL;DR

We took a weak, unsupported cellar wall and reinforced it with concrete and steel rebar. Using acrow props, carefully dug trenches, and anchoring resin, we created a strong foundation ready for the next stage of the conversion.


Starting Out: Know Your Walls

I live in a late 19th century stone-built Victorian terrace. The house has two exterior walls and two interior walls running down the middle, supporting the staircases.

When I started digging down to create more headroom in the basement, a builder mate warned me that a single-skin wall on one side probably didn’t have a proper foundation. Sure enough, he was right. Before lowering the floor, I had to reinforce the wall.

“If you think your wall’s fine without a proper foundation, think again - you’re just waiting for disaster.”


The Plan: Concrete and Steel

The wall needed a 12–14 inch reinforced concrete foundation poured into the heavy clay below. Here’s how we tackled it:

  1. Acrow Props First – The ceiling had to be supported to prevent any collapse.
  2. Trench Digging – We couldn’t dig out the entire 6-foot wall at once; it’d be unstable. So, we dug three roughly one-foot-wide trenches underneath the wall.
  3. Initial Concrete Pour – Filled the trenches with concrete and waited for it to set. In my case, that meant three years.

Connecting Old and New Concrete

With the first pour hardened, it was time to tackle the cavity between the initial concrete pads:

  • Drill three holes through the set concrete.
  • Pump in anchoring resin to bond rebar to the old concrete.
  • Hammer rebar into the holes for a solid, unified structure.
  • Place a board across the front of the pads and pour the concrete into the cavity.

We let that set for about a week and a half before repeating on the opposing cavity.

The Result: A Reinforced Cellar Wall

After all the digging, pouring, and bonding, the once shaky single-skin wall is now solid, ready for the rest of the cellar conversion.
